  1. An aqualung is an underwater breathing 
  2. apparatus worn by divers. It was developed 
  3. in the early 1940s. Compressed air cylinders
  4. strapped to the diver's back are regulated 
  5. by a valve system and by a mouth tube to 
  6. provide air to the diver at the same 
  7. pressure as that of the surrounding water
  8. (which increases with the depth). The vital
  9. component of an aqualung is the 
  10. demand-regulator, a two-stage valve in the
  11. diver's mouthpiece. When the diver breathes
  12. in, air first passes from the compressed-air
  13. cylinders through a valve to the inner 
  14. chamber of the mouthpiece. There, water that
  15. has entered the outer chamber pressurizes 
  16. the air to the surrounding pressure before 
  17. the diver takes in the air.
